In the midst of all the turmoil, I have been keeping up with the lifting and running. In fact, I competed in my first meet up in Bethlehem, PA last weekend and PR’d by a decent amount in both the snatch and clean and jerk. (Please excuse the poor video quality…should have had coach use my phone instead of his to get this on video.)
First was the snatch. My highest qualifying was 38kg, which was 3kg more than my previous best.
I tried for 40kg and got it up, but it was really sloppy and I pushed out with my left arm so it was a non-qualifying effort. Still, to know it’s there somewhere is awesome.
Then came the clean and jerk. Another PR here, even though it also counted as a no-lift because of that baby push-out you’ll see on the left side in the jerk. Regardless of what USA Weightlifting says, I’m counting it as a solid PR since I got it up relatively cleanly.
All in all, it was a solid day and I’m proud of myself. I’ve been doing this for just over four months and am not built for this sport at all, but I’m stoked at the progress I’ve made.
My next goal is to attempt to qualify for a national level meet during the summer. Qualifying total for my weight class (58kg) is 100kg so I’ve got about 12-14 kilos to go, but I’m optimistic and, if I don’t qualify, I know I will have given it my best shot.
